YPRES (IEPER)

This area was known in the First World War as the "Ypres Salient" and was the last small area of Belgium held by the Allied forces of Belgium, the British Empire, and France. The front line hardly moved here for the four year duration of the War and the landscape was left devastated. The intricate drainage system designed to cope with the high water table was smashed leaving the land virtually a swamp. In the years since the War, this has been reconstructed giving a well drained rich agricultural landscape. This is the largest section of the photographic project and is accessed via the map below.
