If, 150 years ago, we had been looking at the view in the first picture, we would have been staring at the foot of the Rhone Glacier. Over the succeeding years this has shrunk significantly and retreated several miles up into the mountains due to the warming climate. The glacier is not white, as you might expect, but covered on its flat surfaces in a dark debris which only increases the sun's warming and consequent melting.

The two sculpted heads seen in the Zurich pages are from one of Rodin's 'Gates of Hell' sculptures displayed outdoors in Zurich.
