The front line of the First World War in Belgium ran from Nieuwepoort on the coast down to the French border near Armentieres. After the fighting around Ypres in October 1914 the line did not move far for the next four years. As a result, the landscape was heavily scarred, woods uprooted and towns and villages flattened. My photographs seek to show the contemporary landscape and the pattern of redevelopment, restoration, and regrowth since 1918. Apart from the lack of field hedges, the layout of today is remarkably similar to that of the immediate prewar period, which a study of maps of the two periods will demonstrate. |
