The landscape to the south of Ypres is more varied than that to the north. The flat land slowly rises to the ridge around Wijschate and Mesen (Messines) and there are more extensive areas of woodland. The canal at Palingbeek was originally intended to connect Ypres with Roulers but due to problems with the underlying geology was never completed. War damage to the lock gate is quite obvious. This section now forms a park used by walkers and joggers, and family groups at the weekend. The small wood once known as Bois 40, near Wijtschate, became a trench museum after the war but was abandoned, as seen here, until it was recently cleaned up and rebuilt as a more modern trench museum, now known as "Bayernwald".
